“State-owned companies always make losses under the Workers’ Party,” says Tarcísio

São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) criticized the Lula administration and its management of state-owned companies. Responding on social media to a video with a graph showing losses at the Postal Service, de Freitas stated that "state-owned companies always make losses" under Workers' Party administrations.
"Need I comment? The graph speaks for itself. State-owned companies always make losses under PT governments. They have what I call a detailed lack of knowledge of the subject when it comes to public management. And do you know who pays the bill? You, me, and all Brazilians," he wrote on his X account.
The governor – who could run for President as a right-wing alternative to Bolsonaro's impossibility – also took the opportunity to campaign for his administration and say that the state is on the right path.
Post Office in crisisThe financial crisis at the Brazilian Postal Service peaked in 2025, with a historic deficit already exceeding all losses recorded since 2016. The state-owned company has been in the red since its last profit in 2021 and is facing a spiraling billion-dollar deficit caused by rising costs, loss of competitiveness, mismanagement, and a drastic drop in international orders—aggravated by the so-called "blouse tax," implemented by the Lula administration.
Among the main causes are the loss of market share to private companies, the impact of taxation on international remittances—which reduced revenue by approximately R$2.2 billion—and the low profitability of agencies: only 15% operate in the black. Politically influenced management is also the target of criticism, with accusations of job allocation and partisan interference.
